Personal narratives were selected to be published with Amazing-Kids.org in February 2016.

The personal narratives were written in 8th grade language arts classes as part of the project-based learning project “The Power of Story.” Students wrote about a person or a time in their life that made a big impact on them personally.  The students were given a choice to share the narrative with that person, write a reflection or submit the narrative to Amazing-Kids.org.

“This is our first year submitting to this site and we’re so proud of how many of the narratives were selected for publication on the site,” said Leslie Jordan, Mariemont Junior High teacher. “We are always looking for ways for our kids to share their voice and experiences, and this was a great opportunity for them to do just that.”

Below is the list of students and their selected narratives.

Elizabeth Bonnell – “A New Adventure”
Lola Ashinger – “Clear Skies”
Clare Hunter – “Life’s Endless Thoughts”
Zach McClorey – ‘The Power of Story”
Shannon Renner – “The Monstrous Red Cast”
Ava Hatcher – “Adventures in the Gorge”
Jillian Teeters – “A Glimmer of Hope”
Ellie Poindexter – “My Mission Trip to Haiti”

During a May Kiwanis Club of Mariemont meeting, the writers of the winning Memorial Day essays read their written works of art. All of the winners are currently in 6th grade in the Mariemont City School District, and all of the winners will read their essays during the Memorial Day ceremony in each district community.

“This is an opportunity for kids to investigate for themselves what this holiday really means,” said Ericka Simmons, principal at Mariemont Elementary. “It allows our students to realize their writing and research skills, while gaining an understanding about an important part of our collective history as a nation.”

The essay winners are Trip Fries from Terrace Park Elementary; Ally Scheeser from Mariemont Elementary, representing Mariemont; and Ellese Lowery from Mariemont Elementary, representing Fairfax. Olivia Simpson, from Mariemont Elementary, was named runner up.

“I feel honored to see the lasting impact that writing these essays has made on our students,” said Ann Williams, teacher at Terrace Park Elementary. “They go home and ask their parents about family members and their own family history. After Memorial Day, the students come to school and tell me they get it now, they understand the importance of the holiday.”

The essays focus on the bravery of all of those that have protected or currently protect our country, the sacrifices people have made for freedom and other patriotic anecdotes and historical facts, including the celebrations of and reflections on the life and impact of a soldier or veteran.

Mariemont Junior High Students Win Stock Market Game

MJHS_STock_Club_2A team of 7th grade students from Mariemont Junior High School received first place in the Southwest Ohio Middle School Division competition, in which 133 teams competed. The team also placed 3rd in the state, competing against 938 teams. The team “Warrior Stocks” consists of Annie Doran, Jossey Frye, Jacquelyn Kauffman, Abby Miller Melanie Weiss and Claire Wilder, lead by the Kiwanis of Mariemont Stock Market Game leader Roger Stafford.

“The mission of our Kiwanis Club is serving youth, and one of our initiatives is to advance the level of financial education in our schools,” said Roger. “Fifteen years ago we began by helping the Mariemont Junior High form teams, because we believe that every citizen, starting at the earliest age, can benefit from understanding the important role of the capital markets in their lives.”

The Stock Market Game (SMG), which is a vehicle for teaching students about public and private companies and stockholder relations, lasts 10 weeks and each team has $100,000 to invest in a virtual portfolio. Students learn how to research what a company does, its products, its growth rates and its profitability. Kiwanis members Roger Stafford, Jeremy Gates, Jack Smith and Donald Keyes also gave short lessons about investing during lunchtime meetings with the student teams.

“We never recommend specific companies in which the students should invest. Instead, we suggest they follow the news and look at companies that make their favorite products: their food, their clothing, their electronics. We recommend they invest in what they know,” said Roger.

Over the past 15 years, the MJHS Stock Market Game has grown, this year to 10 teams in 7th grade and five teams in 8th grade, with a total of, 81 participants. Kiwanis recognizes two teams in each grade – the top earner and the best portfolio, based on growth and diversification

The members of “Warrior Stocks,” along with the winners in eight other divisions at both the high school and middle school levels, were invited to the University of Cincinnati to receive their awards and compete in the Portfolio Challenge, in which each team had to explain the logic behind their portfolio, where they went for research and what they learned. The two winners travel (all expenses paid) to New York to present to executives at Goldman Sachs, Lazard and Legg Mason and tour the New York Stock Exchange.

Upon entering high school, many students with SMG experience join the Green Envy Investment Club, sponsored by Kiwanis and the OKI Chapter of Better Investing. The club is a legal Ohio partnership and students own stocks under the Uniform Gift to Minors Act. Students join Better Investing and learn methods for effective investing strategies.

For now, the “Warrior Stocks” girls are simply enjoying the experience.

“I am thrilled that this amazing team of young ladies had such impressive results with the Stock Club Game,” said Molly Connaughton, principal of Mariemont Junior High School. “Words cannot express how proud I am of them or how grateful we are for the leadership, knowledge and friendship Kiwanis shares with our students.”

About The Stock Market Game
The SMG is an outreach of the Securities Industry and Financial Markets Association (SIFMA) Foundation (501c3), which represents hundreds of securities firms, banks and asset managers. The Foundation is dedicated to fostering knowledge and understanding of the financial markets for individuals of all backgrounds. Annually, 600,000 4th-12th grade students and their teachers take part in this financial education program.Click here for more information.

Tami CrollDuring the April board meeting, the Mariemont Board of Education will be asked to approve Tami Croll as the new dean of students at Mariemont Elementary, effective immediately after the conclusion of the 2014-15 school year.

“We are excited to have Mrs. Croll transition into the role of dean of students here at Mariemont Elementary, where she can continue to utilize her leadership skills and talents to positively impact our school community and district,” said Ericka Simmons, principal at Mariemont Elementary. “Tami is already a valuable member of our Mariemont Elementary family and team, and has in-depth knowledge of our district and school. Throughout her time here she has been able to perform a variety of teaching and administrative roles, always keeping the students and their needs as her main focus.”

Tami is in her 16th year of teaching and her 8th year of serving as the elementary music teacher at both Terrace Park Elementary and Mariemont Elementary. She holds a Bachelor of Music Education degree and a Master of Arts degree in both education and educational leadership. Mrs. Croll has dedicated herself to promoting student achievement and to developing positive relationships with students, parents, staff and community members. She has been an integral part of the growth and improvement of the music department for Mariemont City Schools, implementing a highly effective and engaging online music curriculum in the elementary buildings. She has also directed numerous shows, musicals and programs.

“Tami’s Mariemont experience has more than prepared her for this next stage in her educational career,” said Steven Estepp, superintendent of Mariemont City Schools. “She will now continue to share her talents, creativity, time and passion in this new role to the benefit of our entire district.”

Mrs. Croll holds a Master Teacher designation, is certified to teach music in grades kindergarten through 12, and possesses her Principal Certification for grades pre-kindergarten through 12.

“The past eight years have been incredibly rewarding and fulfilling for me as a music teacher in this exemplary district. I am ready for the next phase of my career and look forward to the opportunity to make a difference for students beyond the walls of my classroom,” said Tami Croll. “The Mariemont City School District has wonderful students, parents and staff, and I am eager to support the learning environment for the entire school community. This really is a dream come true for me.”

The current dean of students at Mariemont Elementary, Dr. Jim Counts, will be retiring this June after serving 34 years in the Mariemont City School District.

Caring & Sharing at Mariemont Elementary

For over 25 years, through the PTO’s Caring and Sharing Program, Mariemont Elementary families have come together to brighten the holidays of families in need in our community.

This year, the Mariemont Elementary community helped 17 families by collecting cash donations and 224 gifts. The teachers alone raised $280!

This is one of the most compassionate traditions at Mariemont Elementary; one that makes us proud to call Mariemont City Schools our home.

Students Recognized for Their Communication, Leadership

The motto of the school district is to create Scholars of today, leaders of tomorrow. As part of that misison, Mariemont High School is focusing on leadership qualities to help students understand what it takes to become a leader. Each month, one leadership quality is highlighted and teachers can nominate students who have shown this quality during the month.

For the month of November, the students focused on good leaders as good communicators. Teachers were able to nominate students that they felt have good communication skills. These students were put into a drawing and three names were drawn as winners. The Mariemont High School Campus Life team rewarded the winners with a Chipotle lunch that is brought to them during their lunch time at school. The three students that won are:
Erin Ramey – grade 9 (nominated by Mrs. Lee Lowery)
Mac Lewis – grade 12 (nominated by Mrs. Amy Leatherwood)
Bailey Geers – grade 12 (nominated by Mrs. Judy Dunlap)

Other students who were nominated by teachers in November are Ashley Murauskas, Connor Hurlock, Maddie Arends, Hadley George, Olivia Griffith and Matthew Burgess.

Congratulations to the winners and all of the students that were nominated. You are role models both in our school and in our community!
