Featured Business: El Trio

El Trio, a family owned and operated restaurant that serves genuine Mexican food and wine at affordable prices.

The dream of the Hernandez brothers was to bring a taste of Mexico to Mariemont. Luis, the leader in this family enterprise, moved to Mariemont from South Carolina, because he liked the sense of community and convenience he observed in Mariemont. The restaurant opened for business on May 1, 2012, after a thorough planning process. The restaurant has an appetizing salsa bar with flavors that range from mild to very spicy and specializes in tortas which is a Mexican sandwich, quesadillas, fajitas, and awesome desserts. They offer great food at great prices in a pleasant setting for the entire family. They wish to thank the community for being so welcoming.

Texting Laws in Ohio

Penalties for violating Texting Laws in Ohio more severe if you are under 18.

On August 30th, the penalties for texting or telecommunicating while driving in traffic just got stiffer. Basically, it bans drivers young

er than 18 from using any handheld electronic device whether to text, make a call or do anything else. This includes

  1. Talking on a cell phone or Internet phone
  2. Texting or e-mailing in any fashion
  3. Using computers

Older adults are not exempt from the restrictions, but for those under 18, it is considered a primary offense that enables police to pull you over for using an electronic device. For older adults, the offense would be cited only should the driver be pulled over for another reason.

For the first six months of enforcement, only warnings will be given by the police.

If you are under 18, the first offense can bring a $150 fine, payment of court costs and license suspension for 60 days. A second offence can result in a $300 fine and suspended license for one year.

Teenagers with a temporary or permanent driver’s license, take note!!

The Mariemont Planning Commission recently gave the final stamp of approval to Rick Greiwe’s new condo development, Nolan Park, at West Street and Madisonville Road. Construction is scheduled to begin this fall and the complex will consist of 27 luxury condos ranging in cost between $425,000 and $1,000,000.

Rumpke Recycling

Two weeks before the Rumpke fire, Leadership Cincinnati, a program sponsored by the USA Regional Chamber of Commerce, held a tour of the Rumpke Recycling facility on Vine Street for its alumnae.  The field trip brought to light how ‘casual’ we are as home owners in our knowledge about and use of recycling.

The work environment at Rumpke consisted of scores of workers lined up along a maze of swift moving, noisy conveyor belts packed with foul smelling, damp recyclable waste. I estimated that the line-workers spent the majority of their time extracting items that were incorrectly and thoughtlessly placed in home or curbside recycle bins. Many thousands of plastic bags/wrappers, pieces of aluminum foil, polystyrene cups and assorted plastic food containers that Rumpke does not recycle litter the conveyor belts and are feverishly extracted manually into trash bins.

The conveyor belts used at Rumpke are all manufactured in Europe where recycling is taken more seriously and greater sorting of recyclables is carried out prior to pickup. Everyone in the recycling business concedes that in America the majority of waste in landfills could be recycled.

Recycling is a for-profit business. Aluminum and metal cans are the most profitable; followed by glass containers (the lids should be removed); then all types of paper; and finally plastic bottles and jugs. Plastic classification with the triangular emblem on the bottom of the container is unimportant to Rumpke.

After the Rumpke Recycling unit reopens, a tour would be eye opening. Those visitors would become more sensitive to ‘green’ recycling behaviors as it instills empathy for the ‘belt-line’ workers that staff this facility.

The Proposed Roundabout at Murray/Plainville/ Madisonville Road

A roundaboutis a type of circular intersection junction in which road traffic flows in one direction around a central island. In a roundabout, entering traffic must always yield to traffic already in the circle, and roundabouts have additional restrictions on the junction layout to give high safety.Roundabouts require more land than stop signs or traffic lights because there a center island around which traffic flows. This adds complexity to converting traffic stops to roundabouts. Currently, few roundabouts exist in Cincinnati to introduce drivers to this more efficient traffic flow architecture. Roundabouts have been the most common intersection model for decades in Europe and Australia. Safety statistics show that roundabouts decrease the number of t-bone traffic accidents resulting in fatalities and that they speed up traffic flow and save gas.

Mariemont High School reminds students not to text and drive

Following a “Don’t Text and Drive” student assembly this year, the Mariemont High School Student Council wanted to establish a constant reminder to students.

They turned to the Mariemont Police/Fire Department to help them in this effort. The Department provided the funds for a “Don’t Text and Drive” (DNT TXT N DRV) banner that is permanently on display on Warrior Way – the drive leading up to the school.

A combined school and community effort led to the “Don’t Text and Drive” banner prominently displayed at Mariemont High School. Pictured here under the new banner are Mariemont Asst. Fire Chief Tim Feichtner, Student Council members Josh Keyes and Emmett Saulnier, Mariemont Police Chief Rich Hines, Police Captain Tim Messer and Student Council members Allie Frey and Adrienne Bruggeman.

The Three Cs of Mariemont

Three words sum up Mariemont living: community, convenience and charm. Whether walking, jogging or riding a bike down its level tree-line

d boulevards, its 3500 residents meet and greet to exchange the niceties of family life, schools, neighbors and local events. As a destination, the town is a center of commercial enterprise, entertainment, historical importance and attractive Tudor architecture. This remarkable cosmopolitan town is just a short drive to all other cultural, sporting, civic and shopping venues that Cincinnati boasts.
